AACN’s Spring Annual Meeting – Special NursingCAS Session
March 20, 2016 @ 12:15 pm - 1:15 pm
Promoting Diversity in Admissions, Lessons Learned from Dentistry
Join us for lunch and an opportunity to learn from Kim D’Abreu, MPH, the Senior Director for Access, Diversity, and Inclusion at the American Dental Education Association (ADEA) about how to adapt admissions processes to better promote diversity. During this session, Ms. D’Abreu will explore strategies on how to practice holistic admissions by recruiting diverse students from a wide variety of backgrounds. You can download a copy of the slides.
Dentistry, like nursing, has a centralized application service. Sixty-seven dental schools (the vast majority of ADEA’s membership) participate in their main application service, AADSAS. Many dental schools use holistic review strategies that include looking at the total applicant, not just grades and test scores. Factors considered in the holistic admissions process are experiences, personal attributes, and metrics. Please RSVP by March 14, as space is limited to the first 90 attendees that reply. You can also RSVP via email.
Speaker Biography: Ms. D’Abreu promotes innovative programs and practices aimed at diversity and inclusion as well as strategies that advance robust and diverse learning environments in dental education. These activities focus on efforts to increase the diversity of students, faculty, and administrators in allied, pre-doctoral, and advanced dental education programs.
She is the former Deputy Director of Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Pipeline, Profession & Practice Community-Based Dental Education Pipeline Program at the Center for Family and Community Medicine at Columbia University. She completed her bachelor’s degree at Johns Hopkins University and her graduate degree from Columbia University.
